Why Coach Mom Exist

After decades as an athlete, coach, and community leader, Sharon Butler saw the same challenge repeated again and again:

Talented athletes with incredible potential but without the guidance, strategy, and information needed to move forward.

Through her experience as a university basketball player, international netball athlete representing Canada, grassroots and collegiate coach, and nearly 30 years working in Municipal government supporting youth and equity-deserving communities. Sharon understands how systems work and how athletes can navigate them.

Coach Mom was created to bridge that gap.

Sharon Butler is the founder of Coach Mom Incorporated, a sports marketing and athlete advisory platform dedicated to helping amateur and professional athletes turn their talent into meaningful opportunities.

A former university basketball player, international netball athlete, coach, and community leader, Sharon brings a powerful combination of real sport experience, strategic insight, and people-centered leadership to the work she does with athletes and families.

Sharon’s athletic journey began on the Netball court, Sharon competed for over three decades as an international netball athlete, proudly representing Canada and competing in tournaments around the world including in the Commonwealth Games. Through international competition and travel, she gained invaluable exposure to global sport cultures and developed a deep understanding of the commitment, resilience, and preparation required to perform at the highest levels of sport.

In addition to Netball, Sharon competed at the university level for basketball, gaining firsthand experience in the discipline, preparation, and academic balance required to compete as a student-athlete. She later went on to coach basketball at the grassroots and collegiate levels, mentoring young athletes and helping them develop both their skills and confidence on and off the court.

As the founder of Coach Mom (2015), she has supported the development and placement of student-athletes into prep schools across North America, while also producing high-impact showcases for both female and male athletes seeking recruitment opportunities. This work continues to inform her approach to athlete development, branding, and pathway creation.

These experiences gave Sharon a unique perspective on how sport can open doors, build leadership, and create life-changing opportunities when athletes are supported with the right mentorship and strategy.

Alongside her athletic career, Sharon has built an extensive professional career in public service. She brings proven experience in managing multi-million-dollar initiatives, leading high-performing teams, and executing large-scale programs. This foundation allows her to approach athlete branding and sports marketing with both creative vision and operational precision.

Her work focuses on building strategies that respond to the diverse needs of communities, with a strong emphasis on equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive programming. Through decades of frontline and leadership experience, Sharon has developed a deep understanding of people, community dynamics, and systemic barriers that can limit opportunity.

As both a mentor and strategist, Sharon is known for her honest approach, practical guidance, and deep belief in the power of sport to transform lives, particularly for young women and athletes from communities that have historically had fewer pathways into high-level sport opportunities.

Coach Mom was created to bridge a gap Sharon repeatedly witnessed in both community work and sport talented young people with tremendous potential, but without access to the information, mentorship, and strategic support needed to move forward.

With over 30 years in competitive sports and a decade of collegiate coaching, Elaine is a master of the intangibles: leadership, team culture, and elite athlete development.

As a digital strategist, Elaine helps organizations find their voice in a crowded market. By combining “old school” leadership values with “new school” digital strategy, she crafts meaningful narratives that engage fans and empower communities.

Shamiso Magumbe is a grant writer, consultant, fundraiser, and marketing strategist with experience supporting nonprofits, grassroots initiatives, and social enterprises. She specializes in grant writing, sponsorship development, fundraising strategy, program design, and community engagement.

Through her consulting work, she helps organizations secure funding, strengthen partnerships, and build clear, compelling messaging that connects with funders and communities. She also brings strong marketing experience, including brand development, sponsorship decks, outreach campaigns, social media content, and promotional strategy.
